'In my first fight I was pretty much just a boxer,' says Pearson. 'I was fighting a wrestler who kept taking me down, and I kept getting back up. My face was a mess by the end, but I won the decision.

'Now I’m a well-rounded fighter, and my training’s more well-rounded too. I’ve always trained hard so I’ve had pretty good conditioning, but now I’m using moves like compound lifts, sledgehammer swings and tyre flips to get more explosive and powerful. They’re more functional than moves that just work one body part, so they’ll benefit you whatever sport you’re involved in.

'Check out the video workout above, it includes some of the toughest compound moves I do in the run up to a fight, then give it a go.'

There's a new Ross Pearson workout in every issue of Men's Fitness. You can subscribe to it here and download a digital version of the mag here.

From 2008 to 2018, Joel worked for Men's Fitness, which predated, and then shared a website with, Coach. Though he spent years running the hills of Bath, he’s since ditched his trainers for a succession of Converse high-tops, since they’re better suited to his love of pulling vans, lifting cars, and hefting logs in a succession of strongman competitions.
