The following is an excerpt from Sam's paragliding feature in the August 2013 issue of Men's Fitness:
‘Just keep running.’ It’s the first thing anyone tells me when I ask for advice. But as I prepare to leap off a mountain ledge high above the town of Amer in northeast Spain, that’s the last thing I want to do.
I’m connected by a tandem harness to instructor Alex Ledger and focusing on a bright orange windsock in front of me. As soon as it flutters into life he’ll expect me to start – and keep – running. But it hasn’t moved for almost five minutes, giving me ample time to picture what could go wrong. Then I feel a cool breeze against my face. We have our green light. ‘Shall we give it a go?’ Ledger asks. Before I realise this is rhetorical he shouts, ‘Three, two, one, go!’
