Nippy mornings require a warming brekkie, and porridge is the definitive warming brekkie. Sure, you might have experimented with muesli or some other fanciful cereal during the summer, but come September it’s time to turn back to porridge. This is Britain after all – you can expect a chill in the air every morning until next June.

However, plain porridge can start to wear you down with blandness if you have it every morning. So instead, view basic porridge as a blank canvas and add all manner of other ingredients to keep your morning routine interesting, and indeed delicious.
