2005 - Cavendish, aged 19, wins madison gold with teammate Rob Hayles at the Track World Championships and begins road racing with Team Sparkasse.
2007 - In his first professional season on the road with T-Mobile, the 22-year-old Cavendish records 11 wins - a joint record for a debutant.
2008 - Cavendish becomes the first Brit to win 4 stages in a single Tour de France with Team High Road, but the fatigue of teammate Bradley Wiggins costs him a madison medal at the Beijing Olympics.
2009 - Cavendish wins the 298km Milan-San Remo and 6 stages of the Tour de France with HTC-Columbia. A controversial penalty for coming off his line against Thor Hushovd costs him the green jersey.
2010 - Cavendish is withdrawn from the Tour de Romandie for making a V-sign and crashes at the Tour de Suisse and Tour de France. He wins 4 stages in France and the points jersey in the Vuelta a Espana.
2011 - Cavendish claims the Tour de France green jersey with 6 stage wins and becomes Britain’s first road world champion since Tom Simpson in 1965. He is later named BBC SPOTY.
2012 - Cavendish joins Team SKY on January 1 and wins 2 stages in his opening race at the Tour of Qatar.
